Built in 1856, Redruth Gaol was the first prison built outside of Adelaide.

Accessible exclusively with the Burra Heritage Passport, this iconic building offers a rare glimpse into South Australia's early penal system and its gripping past.

Famous for its role in the acclaimed 1979 film Breaker Morant, Redruth Gaol offers more than just a cinematic connection. Closed as a prison in 1894, it later became a girls' reformatory, adding another chapter to its captivating story.

Wander through its eerie halls and discover displays that bring to life the harsh conditions faced by both prisoners and reformatory inmates. Each corner of the gaol holds stories of hardship, reform, and resilience, echoing the spirit of the pioneers who built this region.

Your journey into the past begins with the Burra Heritage Passport, available from the Burra & Goyder Visitor Information Centre.
