The Miner's Cut
Flinders Ranges and Outback
Mine it by night, work the opal the next morning, and keep your share if colour is found. The Miner's Cut is the most immersive Unearthing Opal Experience: an extended night dig with Dan Measey, known from Discovery's Outback Opal Hunters, on a genuine working claim in Coober Pedy.
Everything from Opal Miner for a Night is included, plus extended mining time, hands-on use of additional tools including jackhammers, a detailed opal presentation from rough to polished, and lessons in reading indicators when chasing opal-bearing ground. Smaller groups mean more one-on-one time with the miners, and free unpowered camping at the workshop base is available.
The next morning, return to the opal cleaning and classing workshop. See finds cleaned, sorted and valued with the tumbler, soda blaster and hand tools, watch grading and cutting demonstrations, and learn how opal value is determined. If a good parcel is found, guests may join a visit to local classers or buyers.
Each participant receives a five percent share of any opal found, provided as opal or its value at the operator's discretion. Runs March to November, for ages eight and up, with limited dates and advance booking essential.
