Discover the Giant Red Gum – Orroroo's Living Landmark

Standing proudly in the heart of Orroroo, the iconic Giant Red Gum is a must-see for travellers exploring the Southern Flinders region.

This magnificent River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) is estimated to be over 500 years old, making it a true survivor of Australia's harsh and changing landscapes. With an impressive circumference of more than 10 metres and a towering trunk that rises over 6 metres before branching, the tree is a remarkable example of natural resilience and beauty.

Often nicknamed the "Widow Maker" due to its tendency to shed large limbs, this ancient giant commands both respect and admiration. Its twisting trunk, weathered bark and expansive canopy create a striking visual experience that draws visitors from near and far.

Set within a peaceful, well-maintained park, the site offers shaded picnic areas, an electric barbecue and easy access for caravans—making it the perfect place to stop, relax and soak in the surroundings. Informative signage shares the story of the tree and its significance to the local community, adding depth to your visit.

Whether you're a nature lover, photographer or simply passing through, the Giant Red Gum offers a moment to pause, reflect and connect with something truly timeless.

Make Orroroo part of your journey—you won't forget it.
