Discover the best summer activities in South Australia

There’s hot, and then there’s South Australian summer hot. The kind that makes peaches perfumed and sticky, fills the night air with cicada symphonies and sends kids racing through sprinklers.

From December to February, the temperature often hits the mid-30s, with some inland spots soaring even higher. But this is the season we’re built for — windows down and coastlines calling.

Summer here means road trips to the South Australian coast, detouring for mangoes at a roadside stall or pulling over to photograph a pink lake at its peak. It means beach mornings with the family before the sand gets too hot to walk on and late swims timed perfectly with a syrupy sunset. In the city, it’s festive markets in December, followed by a calendar of festivals and big summer moments.

We’ve got space, sunshine and plenty of it to share. Come spend your summer on South Australian beaches.

Best things to do on hot days in Adelaide

Adelaide knows heat. It’s part of life here — shaping the way we move, the way we eat, the way we plan a day.

When the temperature climbs, Adelaide beaches call early. Glenelg, Henley and Semaphore draw early crowds who stake out their spot before the sun takes hold. Some use their summer break stay for hours. Others take their swim, towel off and carry on down Jetty Road or into Henley square looking for other ways to cool down. People duck into cafés, scan freezer cabinets and leave with ice-cream cones that drip faster than you can eat them.

In the city, Victoria Square gathers people in its shade. Kids run through water jets. Office workers pause with iced coffees. During summer events like the Tour Down Under, the space fills with energy — spectators leaning on fences, fanning themselves while waiting for the blur of wheels.

South Australia's Regions in Summer

Every region offers its own kind of relief to the Aussie summer — bare feet in a Yorke Peninsula rock pool, a breeze through the red gums in the Riverland or the deep shade of a verandah in the Barossa.

Plan your South Aussie summer

No two summer trips are the same. Some are built around family days on an Adelaide beach and bakery stops, others around open roads and an esky in the boot. South Australia suits both. The days are long, and we’ve got more than enough to fill them.

If you need a place to start, our trip planner helps you connect the dots — coastlines, pink lakes and holiday deals included.
