Experience South Australia on a Budget

Holidays should feel rich in the ways that matter, like a bakery bag rustling in the passenger seat or a sunset you would have paid good money for, if anyone had thought to charge. This page is here for that kind of planning: the clever little wins that help you spend less, without shaving the pleasure off the trip.

Travel solo, bring someone you love or pile into the car with friends and take a road through South Australia’s 12 regions. You might wake in the outback or keep Adelaide as your base, with the beach one way and the Hills the other.

Along the way, you’ll find affordable places to stay, current deals, free things to do and enough low-cost discoveries to make ‘budget’ feel like just a very satisfying bit of holiday strategy.

Free things to do in Adelaide

Adelaide is home to an abundance of simple pleasures that fill your cup, without needing to spill lots of cash. Free attractions can be found right across the city, behind gallery doors, along the river and under the old shade of the parklands. Ride the tram to the coast when the weather is behaving and spend the afternoon dining on local fish and chips as you watch the sunset over the ocean. Just beyond the city centre, conservation parks set the scene for a morning hike. Don’t forget to look up as you go, you may spot a wild koala tucked into the gums. Browse free events in Adelaide below and plan your short stay around what is already happening.

Holidays by the road

A road trip has a way of stripping travel back to the simple things. It’s the joy of watching the landscape change through the window, spotting an echidna ambling beside the track or pulling up for a pub counter lunch in a small town.

Just keep a steady eye on the trail. Read the signs before turning down unsealed roads - which are better suited to a 4WD - and plan your stops around daylight, as wildlife loves to wander at dawn and dusk.

If your dates are flexible, you can also look into vehicle relocations. Platforms like CoSeats and Transfercar offer one-way campervan rentals from $1 a day, making it a low-cost way to explore further.
