Eyre Peninsula
YALATA - Head of Bight Whale Watching Centre
Eyre Peninsula
Between June and October, this remote coastline becomes a significant nursery for Southern Right Whales, as mothers arrive to calve in the sheltered waters below the cliffs. From the platforms, visitors can witness these gentle giants breaching, nursing and gliding through the deep blue below, often close enough to hear their powerful exhales echo across the ocean.
Beyond the whale watching, the centre also functions as a welcoming rest stop for travellers crossing the Nullarbor, with a café, gift shop, picnic area and accessible boardwalks designed to allow all visitors to experience the breathtaking scenery and spectacle comfortably. Informative displays throughout the site provide insight into whale behaviour, migration patterns and the ecological importance of the region, adding depth to the visual experience unfolding just beyond the railings. Open seasonally, the Head of Bight Whale Watching Centre offers a rare combination of accessibility and wilderness, a place where the scale of the landscape and the rhythm of marine life come together in one unforgettable encounter.
